Frequently Asked Questions
What is a sleep study?
Essentially, we attach sensors to get insight into your breathing and sleeping patterns. The wires are placed on your scalp to monitor your brain waves during the night, this allows Dr. Kanu Patel to determine exactly how much sleep you get during the study.
Where will you put the wires and other sensors?
Eye Sensors – A sensor will be placed on the corner of each eye. These allow the technologist and Dr. Patel to know when you are in REM (dream sleep).
EKG – Each side of your chest. These are EKG leads that allow your heart rate and rhythm to be monitored.
Leg Sensors – These are to monitor for restless leg syndrome and periodic leg movements, which can interfere with the quality of your sleep.
Effort Belt – An elastic belt will be placed around your lower abdomen and your upper chest. The belt allows us to monitor your breathing effort.
Flow Sensor – A sensor will be placed under your nostrils to allow your breathing to be monitored.
Snore Mic – A sensor will also be placed on the side of your neck. This is a snore microphone that allows the technologist and Dr. Patel to see how much and to what extent you may snore.
Oxygen Sensor – A sensor will also be placed on your finger to monitor your blood oxygen level throughout the night.
Ground – Forehead, this is a ground wire.
Reference – Behind each ear. These wires allow the brain signals to be cross referenced in the event that one of the wires on your scalp should come off or become lose.
Will I be able to sleep with all these wires?
All of these wires will be tied together behind you in a ponytail fashion so that if you toss and turn during the study you will not become tangled in them. Most patients say they forget the wires are even on them once in bed.
How long does the setup take?
The entire hook up procedure takes between 45 minutes to an hour. Once the hook up is complete you can move freely around the room and facility in the even you need to use the restroom during the night.
What time should I arrive?
Between 8:45 and 9:00, please be on time for your appointment. Each night 2 patients are scheduled and the technologist needs to have both of you hooked up in bed before 11:00PM.
Please bring appropriate nightwear. Please try to avoid satin or silk nightwear as it causes the sensors placed around your abdomen and chest to slide. Do not use any lotions on your arms, legs, or face. Women are asked to not wear facial make-up or to wash it off before beginning the hook up procedure.
